I can't access EBSCO or other databases from home or off-campus. What should I do?

Answer

The database login off-campus is the same username/password you use for your Blackboard or FCC email. If you have already logged into either of those systems, you should also be automatically logged into the databases.

If you are not able to login to Blackboard, your FCC email, or the databases, the problem is likely with your user login. For help, see the FAQ on troubleshooting and resetting password problems

If you are able to login to Blackboard, but still unable to access Academic Search Premier, GVRL, JSTOR or any of our other research databases from home, try the following steps:

Make sure you have the right links:

Databases must be accessed through our Research Databases list. If you are not using those links the database won't know you are from FCC and you won't be able to access it.

  • If you left a database open in a browser window for a long time, the database may have timed out and brought you to a generic login page. Go back to the Research Database page to login to the database again.

If the link is for a specific article or resource in a database and not working:

  •  It is possible the permalink or document URL was not used which means the resource will no longer be accessible. You will have to search for it again.

If the link that isn't working is in a Blackboard course:

  • Make sure to contact your instructor and let them know.

Here is an explanation of how permalinks work and how to make sure you are grabbing the correct URL when linking to an item in a database:

See if the problem is with your browser:

Browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) can be finicky. The tips below might help.

  • Try a different browser to login or use a private or incognito tab in the browser you are using.
  • Make sure your browser is up to date.
  • If using a different browser or private tab works, you will need to clear your cache on your original browser before you use the databases again.

Clear the Cache:

As we mentioned, browsers can be finicky, but clearing the cache of a browser can often fix weird technical problems. Try clearing your browser's cache, then try reconnecting to the databases.

  • This FAQ provides instructions on how to quickly clear most browser caches.
