I'm having trouble with ASL tutoring. What do I do?
Answer
Scheduling a session:
Question: I can't find where I should schedule online tutoring.
Answer:
1) Online tutoring is scheduled through Blackboard. Go to any course in your homepage and go to Start Here> Student Support, and click on the Online Tutoring link. If you don't see the "Student Support" option in "Start Here", check another course to see if it is there. For ASL tutoring, students can choose between Group Practice Sessions (led by ASL Faculty) or Individual ASL Support (one-on-one tutoring with an ASL Learning Assistant).
2) If you are still having trouble, contact us.
Joining your Session:
Question: I have signed into tutoring, but I can't see my tutor, and I've been waiting a while. What do I do?
Answer:
1) Make sure you have an appointment for today, at this time. Online tutoring is by appointment only. Check your email confirmation or look at the "My Appointments" tab once you have logged into online tutoring from Blackboard.
2) Verify if you have an appointment for an individual session or a group session. The way you join a session depends on which one you have booked. You can check by looking at your confirmation email. If it says your class name (ex: ASL 1), it is an individual session. If it says "group," you have booked a group session.
a. To join individual sessions, log in to Blackboard, from your Blackboard course, go to Start Here > Student Support > Online Tutoring*
On the next screen, under Frederick Community College, select "Start Now." Select “Start Now” on the "Start an Existing Online Tutoring Appointment" option. Choose "ASL" under the drop-down menu and Select "Get Help Now." Select "Begin Lesson" when the tutor has opened the room & enjoy your session.
b. To join a group session, login to Blackboard, and from your Blackboard course, go to Start Here > Student Support > Online Tutoring. Select “Start Now” under "Frederick Community College." Select “Join Now” on option: "Join ASL or Spanish Group Tutoring Session" (4th option down NOT the second option which is only for individual sessions). When the tutor has opened the room, you will see the option to join appear. Select "Join" and enjoy your session
3) If you have verified that you have an appointment and have followed the instructions above and you still haven't connected with the tutor, contact the front desk of the Tutoring & Writing Center: 301.846.2444. If it is after business hours, email jgeorg@frederick.edu, and we will get back to you when we reopen.
