Are PubMed Central articles open educational resources?

PubMed Central (PMC) does allow free access to scientific journal articles that might otherwise be behind a pay wall. However, just because the articles are free, it does not mean that the articles are open.

If an article in PMC does not have a Creative Commons license mentioned in the article record, the article is likely still under copyright protection.

If you have a PMC article that is still under copyright, you may:

  • Link to the article in Blackboard

You would need permission from the copyright owner, most likely the publisher of the Journal, to:

  • Make copies for your class
  • Download and upload the article into your Blackboard course
  • Add the article to a course packet
