How do incorporate AI-generated images in my paper?

Answer

When adding AI-generated images to your papers, you should caption them using the abbreviation "Fig." which stands for figure.  Each formatting style has its own guidelines on how to format figures in student papers. See templates and examples below for MLA, APA, and Chicago/Turabian.

MLA: Caption goes below the image with this information:

Fig. 1. “Actual Prompt” prompt. Name of AI Tool, version, Publisher, Date, URL for tool.

Example:

Fig. 1. “Pointillist painting of a sheep in a sunny field of blue flowers” prompt, DALL-E, version 2, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, labs.openai.com/.

APA: Figure and number go above a brief description of the image. Below the image, add a note with the following information:

Note: Image generated with "actual prompt" by Company/Publisher, AI Tool, year of version URL of tool.

Example:

Chicago/Turabian: Caption should go under image with this information:

Fig. 1. "Actual Prompt," imaged generated by Publisher +'s  AI Tool, Month day year the image was created.

Example:

Fig. 1. “A modern office rendered as a cubist painting,” image generated by OpenAI’s DALL·E 2, March 5, 2023.
