How do I cite Generative AI, such as Chatgpt, in the MLA Format?

Answer

For the MLA format,  if you are quoting or paraphrasing information that was generated by AI, use the following template for your Works Cited:

"Prompt entered into AI" prompt. Name of AI, version, Company that made the tool, Date the content was generated, URL.

Note: Original URLs for AI-generated content are not useful for inclusion in Works Cited because they are only accessible to the original searcher (they require a login). There are third-party tools/browser extensions that will create a publicly-accessible link to content generated by AI.  If you are able to use such a tool, do so. Otherwise, include the generic URL (example below).

For example:

“Describe the symbolism of the green light in the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald” prompt. ChatGPT, 13 Feb. version, OpenAI, 8 Mar. 2023, chat.openai.com/chat.

In-text citation example:

("Describe the symbolism")
