How do I cite an interview using the APA format?

Answer

  • According to APA, if you are interviewing a person yourself, you do not need to include a citation for the interview in your reference list. Instead, you would do an in-text citation using the following format: (First initial. Last Name, personal communication, date of interview).

 For example:

Workshops increase student success (S. Sloan, personal communication, June 5, 2020).

  • If the interview was published in a radio show, newspaper, magazine, or journal article, you would create a citation for your reference list using the usual format for that type of source. Here are some examples:

Radio show:

Scott, S. (Host). (2022, March 19). Karen Joy Fowler paints the unlikely life path of John Wilkes Booth in novel 'Booth' [Radio broadcast]. NPR. https://www.npr.org/2022/03/19/1087712602/karen-joy-fowler-paints-the-unlikely-life-path-of-john-wilkes-booth-in-novel-boo

Newspaper article:

Soloski, A.(2022, March 15). So long, medical scrubs. Jesse Williams is ready to play ball. The New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/15/theater/jesse-williams-interview-broadway.html

Journal Article:

Hill, R. M., Kaplow, J. B., Oosterhoff, B., & Layne, C. M. (2019). Understanding grief reactions, thwarted belongingness, and suicide ideation in bereaved adolescents: Toward a unifying theory. Journal of Clinical Psychology75(4), 780–793. https://doi-org.ezproxy.frederick.edu/10.1002/jclp.22731
