How do I cite an online newspaper using the Chicago Manual of Style/Turabian?

Answer

This information has been updated for the 18th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style.

General notes on newspapers in the Chicago Manual of Style :

  • The city name, if not part of the title of a local newspaper, should be added in parentheses. This is not necessary for widely known publications like The Wall Street Journal or the The Christian Science Monitor.
  • Add the state abbreviation, in parentheses, if there could be confusion over which state the city is located in.  For example: Urbana, MD versus Urbana, IL.
  • For newspaper articles that have no author, the article titles comes first in the footnote/endnote citation, but in the bibliography entry, the newspaper title comes first (see example below).
  • News sites like BBC News, CNN, and Vox are treated like the newspapers
  • The previous edition of The Chicago Manual of Style recommended taking "the" out of the beginning of the title of newspapers (ex: The New York Times). This recommendation was removed in the 18th edition.
