How do I cite an e-book or audiobook using the APA format?
Answer
To cite an e-book from a library database in your references list:
For the APA format, you don't include database information in your citation. APA also prefers a DOI instead of a URL. If you can not locate a DOI, you should put the homepage URL of the journal or book publisher. You can do this by doing a quick web search. Do not include the URL from the database.
Last Name, F. M. (Year). Title of book. Publisher. DOI if available (no period)
For example:
With DOI:
Drago, E. (2019). Painted Alchemists: Early Modern Artistry and Experiment in the Work of Thomas Wijck. Amsterdam University Press. https://doi.org/10.1515/9789048537778
Without DOI:
Gorman, J. L. (2019). Slavery;s Long Shadow: Race and Reconciliation in American Christianity. Eerdmans. https://www.eerdmans.com/Products/7623/slaverys-long-shadow.aspx
In-text citations for e-books follow the usual format:
Direct quotations:
(Author Last Name, Year, Page number, if available).
(Drago, 2019, p. 79)
Paraphrases:
(Author Last Name, Year)
(Gorman, 2019)
Audiobooks:
You do not need to indicate that you used the audio version of a book unless:
- the content is different from the printed version (for example, an abridged edition)
- if you would like to reference something about the narrator of the audiobook
- if you quote from the audiobook
- if the audiobook was published in a different year than the print version (in this case you would treat it as a republished book)
When indicating a work is an audiobook, you use the following format:
Author Last Name, F. M. (year). Title of book (First initial and Last Name of Narrator, Narr.) [Audiobook]. Publisher. URL or DOI if not from a database.
Example:
Cain, S. (2012). Quiet: The power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking (K. Mazur, Narr.) [Audiobook]. Random House Audio. http://bit.ly/2G0Bpbl
Direct quotations:
(Author Last Name, Year, Time stamp for beginning of quotation).
(Cain, 2012, 4:08:35)
Paraphrases:
(Author Last Name, Year)
(Cain, 2012)
