How do I cite a YouTube video using the APA format?

Answer

To cite a YouTube video in your references list, follow this general format:

Last Name, F. M. [Username, if different] or Group that uploaded video. (Year, Month Date). Title of video [Video]. YouTube. URL

For example:

TED. (2013, 16 July). Gavin Pretor-Pinney: Cloudy with a chance of joy [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhP52caGW6s&t=340s

CBS This Morning. (2020, May 21). Harvard doctor shares "good news" on coronavirus immunity studies [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj_UsNsT0EA&t=1s

For in text citations:

The basic format for in-text citations for videos is:
(Author/group, year)

For direct quotations, use the timestamp instead of the page number:
(Author/group, year, timestamp)

Examples:

Many of the early UFO pictures were actually lenticularis clouds (TED, 2013).

New studies may indicate that humans can become immune to COVID 19 (CBS This Morning, 2020).

"Almost every study is finding that after you have become infected and you clear the infection you do develop antibodies" (CBS This Morning, 2020, 13:24).
