How do I cite a tweet using the APA format?

Answer

To cite a tweet in your references list, use the following format:

Lastname, F. M. or Name of Group [@username]. (Year, Month Date). Content of the post up to the first 20 words [Tweet]. Twitter. URL

Indicate additional information in brackets after the content description (for example: images, videos, links to other sources, emojis).

For example:

DeGeneres, E. [@TheEllenShow]. (2020, May 18). Giving the commencement speech to the Class of 2009 at Tulane, who arrived as freshmen right after Hurricane Katrina, was [Tweet; video clip of Ellen giving speech]. Twitter. https://twitter.com/TheEllenShow/status/1262445625943175172

Trump, D.J. [@realDonaldTrump]. (2020, May 21)Just departed the @WhiteHouse for the great state of Michigan! [Tweet; video clip of President Trump boarding helicopter]. Twitter. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1263522211022770176

To do an in-text citation for a tweet:

Use the author and year format. Since there is no page number, the in-text citations will look the same for paraphrases and quotations.

For example:

The students who graduated from Tulane in 2009 were freshman when Hurricane Katrina hit (DeGeneres, 2020).

"Giving the commencement speech to the Class of 2009 at Tulane, who arrived as freshmen right after Hurricane Katrina, was one of the highlights of my life" (DeGeneres, 2020).
