How do I cite a tweet in MLA format?

Answer

To cite a tweet in your Works Cited, do the following:

Twitter username (Real Name if available). "Full text of tweet." Twitter, date tweet was published, URL of tweet.

Note: when citing a URL in the MLA format, do not include https://

@FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). "The #FBI honors Special Agent Terry R. Anderson, who was shot and killed #OTD in 1966 while searching for a kidnapping victim in rugged mountain terrain near Shade Gap, Pennsylvania. #WallofHonor http://ow.ly/ScNN50zuC6Q." Twitter, 17 May 2020, twitter.com/FBI/status/1261959931298807809.

@jacindaardern (Jacinda Ardern). "What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence. It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities – New Zealand is their home – they are us." Twitter, 14 Mar. 2019, twitter.com/jacindaardern/status/1106397870628847617.

To do an in-text citation of a tweet:

Use the Twitter username only in parentheses.

For example:

Special Agent Terry R. Anderson was murdered in 1966 (@FBI).

The 2019 mosque shootings in Christchurch were denounced by the Prime Minister of New Zealand (@jacindaarden).

"What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence. It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities – New Zealand is their home – they are us" (@jacindaarden).
